Houses of this quality which still retain all their original features are very rarely offered for sale, this truly is a unique opportunity to own a piece of Portuguese history. The property was built in 1861 for the Montenegios family (Senhor Montengios was a Commander in the Portuguese Royal Navy).
Situated in the centre of Lousa, within walking distance of shops, banks, cinema, museums and railway station, this beautiful manor house (approximately 1400 square meters) can be found in a quiet, leafy one way street.
The house is approached via three steps leading to a large double door. Inside is a wonderful entrance hall, a huge brass lantern suspends from the wooden ceiling, the staircase and ornate walls are clad in marble and lead up to a double solid chestnut door, which serves as the internal entrance to the living accommodation.
The property has been exceedingly well maintained throughout, all the floors (unless otherwise stated), are chestnut, as are the doors, windows and ceilings, all are original features and in beautiful condition. The typical Portuguese timber ceilings are approximately 4 meters high.
First Floor
Upon entering the living accommodation, a long hallway is situated either side of the entrance doors, all rooms lead off from this central corridor
The elegant lounge is enormous and has two sets of French windows leading out onto a wrought iron balcony overlooking the front of the property, next door, is a breakfast room, which can be accessed via the hall or via integral double doors, on the opposite side of the corridor there is a double bedroom, further along is a magnificent formal dining room which has a very large, floor to ceiling display cabinet, designed by a well known Portuguese artist (Carlos Reis), the cabinet stretches along the whole wall. A beautiful crystal chandelier adorns the ceiling ( can be purchased as an option)
The large and airy kitchen is fitted throughout with original units, which have been painted cream, but are made of chestnut, the two integral sinks are made of pale pink Portuguese marble, as are all the work surfaces, a central island unit also has a pale pink marble top, the original blue and white hand made wall tiles are all intact as is the terracotta floor, you can even pick your own oranges from the kitchen windows!!
This wing of the house also contains a further double bedroom. Enclosed behind double doors, at the end of the hall, is a wash room with toilet and sink, separate shower room with bidet, toilet and sink, a laundry room with access to a small roof terrace, an ideal area for drying your washing.
To the other side of the entrance doors there are a further four double bedrooms, one with en-suite, a peaceful, large library with two sets of French windows leading out onto a wrought iron balcony overlooking the front of the property, situated next to this room and accessed via integral doors or via the hall, is a snug, two small anti rooms are at the end of the hall, both are currently used as additional seating areas (ideal place to display your plants in winter). A large roof terrace is accessed via this end of the property, a beautifully sunny place to relax and sunbathe on.
Further access to the outside and to the attic area is contained within separate corridor nearly opposite the front entrance.Attic
The large attic contains a further three double bedrooms,(one of which has been used as a nursery) the one at the front of the property has French windows leading onto a wrought iron balcony, there is also a bathroom and three walk in under eves storage areas (could be developed into additional bedrooms)
Ground Floor
Entered via doors either side of the main entrance hall, at present there are three very large rooms used as entertainment areas, an enormous wine cellar, a large bathroom, two large store rooms and a wash room (contains toilet and sink). Your imagination could run riot devising new uses for this extremely large area, there are separate doors to the outside of the property. Most of the rooms on the ground floor have terracotta floors.
Outside
A large fenced and walled garden embraces two sides of the property, mature fruit trees, orange, lemon, nectarine, chestnut and bay are dotted around the grassed area, a large flagstone terrace is situated to one end of the garden, as is the wood shed. The garage sits across the courtyard from the main house.
