Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world, spoken by 260 million people.

The Portuguese language developed from Latin brought here by Roman soldiers and colonists starting in the 3rd century BC and today's language is considerd to be the result of an organic evolution of Basic (or Vulgar) Latin with some minor influences from other languages.

Many people coming to Portugal have a dread of learning the language but there are many more similarities (because of the latin base of English and Portuguese) than are thought. Focusing on the similarities does help.

The Portuguese education system firmly endorses English language in schools and so many people under the age of 40 can speak some English. However, many councils and schools offer free, or very low cost classes in Portuguese.
